Gramps and James in January 2016
Richard "Rick" Owen Sergeant of Lacey, WA, passed away July 30, 2017, at the age of 69.
Rick was born to parents Margaret (Thomas) and Cecil Peterson November 30, 1947, in Grants Pass, OR. His upbringing in Josephine County was interesting and would have a profound influence on the rest of his life. At age 2, Rick and his younger brother Charles “Chuck” were adopted by Walt and Ellen Sergeant (later Thomas). Later in life, Rick played a pivotal role in re-uniting his siblings for the first time.
Throughout life, Rick was known for his intense personality underlain by a passion for life and worldly curiosity. He had a deep and unmatched love for southern Oregon, family history, fishing, wildlife, “language,” and science. Rick and Catherine Sergeant were married February 3, 2001, in Troutdale, OR, and passed 17 adventurous years living together in Vancouver, WA; Madras, OR; and Lacey, WA. Together, they enjoyed road trips, breakfasts at out-of-the-way restaurants, and watching the birds and other wildlife flitting around their yards.
Rick is survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, Christopher Sergeant; his daughter, Kati Sergeant; his grandson, James Sergeant; his sisters, June (Hopkins) Campbell and Lil (Lard) Barnett; and his brothers, George Gwynne, Chuck Sergeant, and Robert Faler.
We are pleased that Rick’s organ donation will provide the gift of sight to a person in need. His ashes will be interred with birth mother Margaret Faler at City View Cemetery in Salem, OR. In the future, a remaining portion of his ashes will also be scattered in places with special meaning to Rick. The family is grateful for condolences, but asks that money spent on flowers or other thoughtful gifts instead be donated to the Cornell Ornithology Lab, a charity that Rick was passionate about.
